I’m not one for “yaoi” (homosexual relationship) when it comes to TV or movies, and I find it interesting that a group of people have tagged Princess Princess as such when it is closer to shounen ai (relationships between men). But I do bring it up because it has a decent plot for a twelve show series (Note it was licensed by Media Blasters for american distribution).
In fact, I really don’t see anywhere near the sexual over tones I normally encounter in most shows of this nature. Much less then say Maria-sama ga Miteru which has a very heavy sexual content (for those who don’t know it’s a series dealing with a set of three all girls schools and the relationships between some of their members). Or even Loveless which is very heavy on the “confused gay high school student” content for a fighting series.
What drew me to the series was this lack of heavy sexual content, while it still presented a story with interesting interpersonal issues. How they handle themselves as being the school’s “princesses” in an all male high school. It’s rare to see a series like this that doesn’t attempt to pin such characters as weak “sissies”, mixed up males wanting to be females or even outright homosexuals. Such a character study is actually refreshing, since it allows us to strip away the “Me man. Me strong.” mentality that most of us tend to build around ourselves and deal with more personal problems.
Granted, I admit the above should be taken with a grain of salt. This is coming from someone who jokingly started watching Powerpuff Girls Z (Yes, Cartoon Network licensed it to a Japanese studio =) and found himself starting to like the series.
And to ensure everything is on the record.
“Me male, me kill, me drag women by hair off to cave to have way with them.”
